In recognition of the rapid proliferation of large language models and AI-assisted tools, JEMS has established this policy to ensure their use is transparent, responsible, and consistent with commitments to authorship integrity and research ethics.

AI in Authorship

AI Tools Cannot Be Listed as Authors. AI tools — including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and similar systems — cannot be listed as authors. Authorship implies accountability that AI systems cannot accept.

Disclosure of AI Assistance. Authors who have used AI tools in any meaningful way must disclose this use in the manuscript, specifying: the name of the AI tool(s), the purpose of use, and the extent of use. Disclosure should appear in Methods (for data analysis), Acknowledgements, or a dedicated statement.

Author Responsibility. Authors bear full responsibility for all content regardless of whether AI tools were used. This includes accuracy of factual claims and citations, originality, absence of plagiarism, integrity of data, and compliance with ethical requirements. AI tools are known to generate factually incorrect content and fabricated citations — authors must verify all AI-generated content independently.

AI in Peer Review

Prohibition on Unauthorised AI Use. Peer reviewers must not upload, paste, or transmit manuscript content to external AI tools or language models. Manuscripts are confidential documents and their upload to third-party AI platforms violates that confidentiality.

Reviewers may use AI for their own writing assistance in drafting review reports, provided this does not involve transmitting manuscript content and the evaluation reflects the reviewer's own scholarly judgment.

AI in Editorial Processes

Editors may use AI tools for administrative purposes subject to appropriate confidentiality safeguards. Editorial decisions must be made by qualified human editors on the basis of genuine scholarly evaluation. AI systems shall not make or determine editorial decisions.

Policy Evolution

JEMS will review and update this policy periodically to reflect technological developments and evolving community standards.
